quran isn’t revealed as a single word but was revealed during a period, that Muslim scholars estimated to be 23 years, after counting the years, starting from the first revelation of the quran in mecca until the prophet muhammad’s death in 632 A.C
Many proofs in the sacred book confirm it was revealed sporadically in successive intervals. In Surah, Al- Furqan Allah replied to the question of the people of mecca who wander why the entire Quran wasn’t revealed once and said it was for strengthening the prophet’s belief.
And those who disbelieve say, “Why was the Qur’an not revealed to him all at once?” Thus [it is] that We may strengthen thereby your heart. (Furqan, 32)
A second verse underpins that evidence, in surah Israa, ayat 106
˹It is˺ a Quran We have revealed in stages so that you may recite it to people at a deliberate pace. And We have sent it down in successive revelations.
Quran was first descended from heaven to the first sky in the holy month of Ramadan, at the night of Layla-tul-qadar, and it was in a preserved book.
Allah described this night, saying:
“Indeed, We sent it down on a blessed night, for We always warn ˹against evil˺. On that night every matter of wisdom is ordained (Surah Dukhan, 3.4)
Then, It was revealed to the prophet Muhammad by Gabriel in one of his retreats in Ghar Heraa. And prophet felt like he was clasped by a titanic power that his face was full of sweat and his heart was trembling and when he sought out his wife Kkadiga, she managed to remove his worries.
Recite in the name of your Lord, Who created man from a clot of congealed blood. Recite: and your Lord is Most Generous, Who taught by the pen taught man what he did not know.
As recorded in Islamic history, those five verses from surah Alaq which start with the word recite, have been the first to be revealed.
And those verses inspired many scholars to see Islam as a light that guides people out of ignorance to enlightenment, out of misconceptions and myths to the facts and proofs. Until today, the word (recite) still reverberates as an outcry to read, because no nation can rise up without education and reading.
When receiving revelation in 609 C.E. Mohammed has already turned up 40, an honest trademan, a husband to a wealthy widow, and a father to 4 beautiful daughters, in a time, when burying baby girls alive was rampant.
Being in his forties, We can say that prophet has gone through a lot of situations in life and successfully completed his preparation as a human and now he is ready to carry the Quran massage, which is, by all standards, isn’t an easy mission.
And you may ask yourself why Quran was revealed when Mohammed turned 40. was it much better if it was earlier?
Maybe, but there is a high potential that people won’t believe him if he is young. as Allah said in the quran:
Say, “If Allah had willed, I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have made it known to you, for I had remained among you a lifetime before it Yunus, 16)
We mentioned before that Quran was revealed over 23 years. 10 years of them were in Mecca before the prophet’s immigration to Al Madinah where the quran continues to be sent for around another 13 years.
The overall surahs of the Quran were 114. The number of Meccan surahs was 86, which equals 2/3 of the Quran, while the rest was revealed in Al Madinah, Yathrib, the second most important city in Islam (thus, they are named the civil surahs)
There are many differences between Meccan and civil surahs, especially in their length and topics. Meccan surahs are shorter and represented the message of Islam, the existence of only one god, paradise, and fire. On the other hand, civil ones were longer and focused on the pillars of Islam and its teachings and jurisprudence, like marriage, separation, trading, war, and community.
Allah Has Mentioned three Names for The sacred book: Quran ( القرآن). The Book (الكتاب), Zekr (reminder) (الذكر), and The Furqan (الفرقان) Which Means the decisive factor between good and evil.
Here are three examples from Quran that highlights those three names
This is the Book! There is no doubt about it —a guide for those mindful ˹of Allah (Baqarah, 2)
Has the Reminder been revealed ˹only˺ to him out of ˹all of˺ us?” In fact, they are ˹only˺ in doubt of My ˹revealed˺ Reminder. In fact, ˹they do so because˺ they have not yet tasted My punishment. (Sad, 1)
Blessed is the One Who sent down the Furqan to His servant, so that he may be a warner to the whole world. (Furqan, 1)
The Quran is divided into 30 parts, also known as juz’ (plural: ajiza).
Each part is further subdivided into sections called hizb (plural: ahzab), and each hizb is divided into 64 units called manzil (plural: manazil).
The purpose of the division is for facilitating reading and understanding of the holy book for the reciter.
Also, the surahs are organized by a length while the longest surahs are located first in Mushaf, and the shortest ones are at the last.
There are 29 surahs in Quran that begin with broken Arabic letters like الر، طس, حم, الم. For example, look at the beginning of surah hud.
Alif, Lam, Ra. [This is] a Book whose verses are perfected and then presented in detail from [one who is] Wise and Acquainted. (Hud, 1)
No person is able to interpret what letters literally mean.
However, some Muslim scholars think that they are openings for the Quran or names of quranic surahs or something that Allah swears by.
Many companions memorized the quran when Prophet Mohammed was alive, and wrote it in many places such as bones and aminal’s skin, but they mostly relied on their memory.
However, When Caliph Abu Bakr al-Siddiq – may God be pleased with him ascended to power, it was a time of strifes and chaos, and he feared that parts of the Quran would be lost, especially after the martyrdom of about 70 memorizers of the Qur’an in the Battle of Yamama.
To this end, Abu Bakr has assigned a committee presided by Zayd ibn Thabit, the personal scribe of the prophet Muhammad to collect the quran and verify its authenticity by checking verse by verse. Every memorizer should have two witnesses who ensured the quranic verses he memorized is true and conform to the original text. Then, all quranic surahs were secured in a book.
The Quran includes many scientific facts that have been verified by modern science. For example, the Quran correctly states that the origin of the universe is created in 6 days and that mountains have roots deep in the ground, everything is created from water, and that there is no light in the deep oceans.
