Sayyidul Istighfar Dua in English and Arabic

sayyidul Istighfar is a dua for increasing baraka in money and sons, shedding your sins, and avoiding Allah’s punishment. Allah said in surah Al Anfal

And Allah would not punish them while you (Muhammad SAW) are amongst them, nor will He punish them while they seek (Allah’s) Forgiveness ( ayat 33)

What’s Sayyidul Istighfar?

It is a hadith from the prophet that implies supplication to Allah. It’s among the Dua that a Muslim repeats in the morning and evening,

It should be noted that the Duas of seeking forgiveness from Allah are numerous. Sayyid istighfar is the best for several reasons, including obtaining the great reward and hastening the answer of Allah.

Hadith about this Dua

Shaddad b. Aus reported God’s messenger as saying that the best manner of asking pardon is to say,

O Allah, You are my Lord. There is none worthy of worship but You. You created me, and I am your slave. I keep Your covenant and pledge to You so far as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I admit to Your blessings upon me, and I admit to my misdeeds. Forgive me, for there is none who may forgive sins but You.

He said that if anyone says it during the daytime with a firm belief in it and dies that day before the evening, he will be one of those who go to paradise. If anyone says it during the night with a firm belief in it and dies before the morning, he will be one of those who go to paradise.

Meaning of the Dua

This dua includes all the significant meanings and mysteries, and here we break down its sentences for an explanation.

  • You are my Lord: a total supplication and submission to Allah’s power
  • There is none worthy of worship but You: It’s an endorsement of the servant by the goodness of Allah and confirming it
  • You created me, and I am your slave: Again, the phrase implies an acknowledgment of Allah’s divinity.
  • I keep Your covenant: the servant admits that he tries to follow Allah’s order as much as possible.
  • Seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done: The servant asks Allah to fortify by Allah from all the sins and evils he made
  • I admit to Your blessings upon me: The servant admits that Allah had given him uncountable blessings and is thankful for him.
  • And I admit to my misdeeds: the servant admits that he made sins, and it can indicate a specific sin Allah only knew or all of his sins.
  • Finally, the servant supplicates Allah to forgive his misdeeds as he knows that he is all-forgiving.

Benefits of this Dua for Muslim

There are many benefits of Istighfar in Islam

It’s a reason for entering paradise.

Prophet Mohammed said in the hadith that If somebody recites it during the day with firm faith in it and dies on the same day before the evening, they will be from the people of Paradise. If somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it and dies before the morning, they will be from the people of Paradise.

It Relieves the Mind of Worries

Asking Allah for forgiveness removes all the Muslim’s worries from the future as he believes Allah will increase his provisions and reinforce his strength.

Also, the Muslim feels closeness to Allah and joy and tranquility in his heart.

And Istighfar is a reason for getting Allah’s mercy as he said in surah Al Naml

“Why to ask ye to hasten on the evil in preference to the good? If only ye ask Allah for forgiveness, ye may hope to receive mercy”. ( Ayat 46)

Undoubtedly, Istighfar is one of the rewarding deeds that has benefits in this life and hereafter.

And Allah ordered Muslims to do that in many verses in Quran no matter what big the sins made by the servant since Allah promises in Quran that He will forgive all sins.

The Difference Between Sayyidul Istighfar and Istikhara Dua

Sayyid istighfar is said every time, and its purpose is to ask Allah for forgiveness for a specific sin or for all the sins combined…

But istikhara Dua is said when the Muslim feels confused about one matter and ask Allah to inspire him with the right answer or choice.

Sayyidul Istighfar Transliteration

Allāhumma anta Rabbī lā ilāha illā ant,

khalaqtanī wa anā `abduk,

wa anā `alā `ahdika wa wa`dika mastaṭa`t,

a`ūdhu bika min sharri mā ṣana`t,

abū’u laka bi ni`matika `alay,

wa abū’u bidhanbī faghfir lī

fa’innahu lā yaghfirudh-dhunūba illā ant.

اللّهـمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّـي لا إلهَ إلاّ أَنْتَ

خَلَقْتَنـي وَأَنا عَبْـدُك

وَأَنا عَلـى عَهْـدِكَ وَوَعْـدِكَ ما اسْتَـطَعْـت

أَعـوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَـرِّ ما صَنَـعْت

أَبـوءُ لَـكَ بِنِعْـمَتِـكَ عَلَـيَّ

وَأَبـوءُ بِذَنْـبي فَاغْفـِرْ لي

فَإِنَّـهُ لا يَغْـفِرُ الذُّنـوبَ إِلاّ أَنْتَ

Dua in Urdu

اے اللہ! تو ہی میرا رب ہے ، تیرے سِوا کوئی معبود نہیں، تو نے مجھے پیدا فرمایا اور میں تیرا بندہ ہوں۔ اور میں اپنی طاقت کے مطابق تیرے عہد اور وعدے پر قائم ہوں، میں تجھ سے اس چیز کے شر سے پناہ مانگتا ہوں جس کا میں نے ارتکاب کیا، میں تیرے سامنے تیرے انعام کا اقرار کرتا ہوں، جو مجھ پر ہوا اور میں اپنے گناہوں کا اقرار کرتا ہوں۔ لہٰذا تو مجھے معاف کردے، واقعہ یہ ہے کہ تیرے سِوا کوئی معاف نہیں کرسکتا۔

হে আল্লাহ, তুমি আমার প্রভু, তুমি ছাড়া কোন মাবুদ নেই আপনি আমাকে সৃষ্টি করেছেন এবং আমি আপনার বান্দা আমি আপনার চুক্তি মেনে চলেছি এবং আমি যতটা পারি আপনাকে প্রতিশ্রুতি দিচ্ছি তুমি যা করেছ তার অনিষ্ট থেকে আমি তোমার কাছে আশ্রয় চাই আমার উপর তোমার অনুগ্রহে আমি তোমাকে দান করি আমি আমার পাপ স্বীকার করছি, তাই আমাকে ক্ষমা করুন কেননা তুমি ছাড়া কেউ পাপ ক্ষমা করে না। তথ্যসূত্রঃ হিসান আল-মুসলিম ৭৯

Istighfar Duas for Forgiveness from Sins

There are many other duas for forgiveness, such as

  • (Our Lord! we have indeed believed: forgive us, then, our sins, and save us from the agony of the Fire) [surah Ali’ Imran; 3:16]
  • (There is no God but You; Glory be to You, Truly I have been one of the wrongdoers)
  • [Surah al-Anbiyah, 21: 87]
  • ˺ “Our Lord! Do not punish us if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord! Do not burden us like the one you placed on those before us. Our Lord! Do not burden us with what we cannot bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our ˹only˺ Guardian. So grant us victory over the disbelieving people.” [Surah al-Baqarah; 2:286]

When to Recite this dua?

Desirable times to pray are after each prayer and as a zeker in the morning and evening.

It is a sunna of the prophet Mohammed, and he used to pray this dua 70 times in one setting and 100 times (in one narration )

  • Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “It is a heavy thing for my heart if I do not seek Allah’s forgiveness a hundred times a day.”
  • Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “By Allah, I seek the forgiveness of Allah, and repent to Him more than seventy times in a day. (Reference: Al-Bukhari).

Istighfar is a cult in Islam and a reason for baraka, rainfall, abundant money and children.

And the best form to ask Allah’s forgiveness is to say Sayyidul Istighfar. Say it in the morning, in the evening, and every time.
