Umm Salamah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying, “When a person suffers from a calamity and utters: Inna Lillahi Wa Inallah E Raji Oon Allahumma ujurni fi musibati, wakhluf li khairan minha (We belong to Allah and Him we shall return. O Allah! Compensate me in my affliction, recompense my loss and give me something better in exchange for it), then Allah surely compensates him with reward and better substitute.” [Muslim].

2. It’s a solace for Muslims and a reminder

When saying Inna Lillahi Wa Inallah E Raji Oon, Muslim reminds himself that someday he’ll leave everything and pass away, so he’d belittle all suffering since he knowns profoundly that everything is temporary and comes to an end.

3. Inna Lillahi Wa Inallah E Rajioon, O God, to have mercy on him and replace his home and family on earth with a better home and better family, O God, do not deprive us of his reward and do not mislead us after his death.”

إنّا لله وإنّا إليه راجعون، أسأل الله أن يرحمه وأن يبدله داراً خيراً من داره وأهلاً خيراً من أهله، اللهم لا تحرمنا أجره ولا تضلنا بعده.”

4. Inna Lillahi Wa Inallah E Rajioon, O God, have mercy on him and forgive him, and forgive his bad deeds and reward him with the best of what he did.”

What do we say when someone dies in Islam?
